Thoughtfully interpreting the context of place
OUR WORK.
Contextualism is understanding that our role as designers is to add a layer to something that already exists. Architects are painting on top of a substrate with a history that we need be very aware of. When we are filling a vacant property, replacing or adding to an existing building, changing the use of a space, or building something new, we inevitably have an impact on the history of place. Simultaneously, it is equally important to look forward. Today’s design will be the layer on top of which future generations build. With every design we look at the past and future potential in order to thoughtfully interpret the context of place.

Josh Johnston grew up in Colorado and knew that he wanted to be an architect early in life. After earning a bachelor’s degree in environmental design from CU Boulder, he followed a career path that ultimately brought him to DAJ Design in 2017. Since joining the team, Josh has contributed to a wide range of residential and commercial projects. Josh values being a part of every aspect of the process from design through construction.
Beyond work, Josh enjoys spending time outside of the built environment hiking with his wife and dog and tending to his garden.
Bill McGuire serves as a versatile project architect working a diverse range of project types. He came to Colorado in 2023 with extensive experience in restaurant and retail, and has expanded his skill base into commercial new construction, custom residential, and brewery/distillery work since joining the DAJ Design team.
Originally from the northwest side of Chicago, Bill discovered his passion for architecture at a young age. This passion pushed him to complete a bachelor’s degree in architectural studies from Southern Illinois University, and later a Master of Architecture from Illinois Institute of Technology. Since graduating Bill has gone on to complete licensure, and he holds an active architecture license in Illinois (working on completing his licensure in Colorado).
Outside of work Bill is an avid long-distance runner and has completed six marathons. In addition, he enjoys travelling, camping, cycling, and skiing.
